And The Frenzy Begins – Nike Air Yeezy 2 Released Today

We’ve all seen the massive lines and camp-outs in preparation for some new hot item. I mean, if H&M can draw a camp-out we’re not too surprised that Kanye West’s new sneaker, the Nike Air Yeezy 2 attracted a crowd that’s been camping out since Tuesday. The shoe goes on sale today and will retail for $245 and only 3,000 – 5,000 pairs will be released. So, some of those Foot Locker campers will probably be going home empty handed.

But get this, the crowd is split between people that plan on wearing the high end high tops and people that plan on keeping the prized possession in the box.  Sneaker freaks go wild. I don’t know any shoe lover that could keep a pair of Louboutins in the box no matter how exclusive they were. And hey, this only a $245 sneaker!

Wrong! I was quick to judge the madness over a sneaker…maybe because I don’t wear them, but the Nike Air Yeezy 2 is more than just a sneaker.  A pair of preordered Nike Air Yeezy 2 sold on eBay for $90,300 on June 6th.  Now, there were doubts the payment will actually go through, especially when other eBay sales of the sneaker have been going for about $6,000, but no matter what this sneaker is definitely making history.

Hello Mr West

From his collaboration with Louis Vuitton in 2009 to skipping the Grammys in February for Fashion Week, Kanye West has been making it very clear that he’s serious about the fashion industry. On October 1st, during Paris Fashion Week, he finally debuted his first Spring/ Summer collection for “DW by Kanye West.” With so much hype around this event, it attracted celebrity and fashion elitists such as Anna Wintour, Carine Roitfeld, Oliver Theyskens, the Olsen twins, Alexander Wang, Silvia Fendi, and the infamous Lindsey Lohan. The front row wasn’t the only area with big names, models Abby Lee Kernshaw, Bambi Northwood-Blyth, and Iman Chanel also graced the catwalk with their presence. Although the line got mixed reviews, there is definitely a pre-mature Balmain feel to it… except with an excess of leather, suede, and heavy beading, zippers, crystals and applique details.

While Kanye didn’t reinvent fashion, he definitely was able to communicate uniqueness with some of his streetwear elements. Kanye hoped to put in end to the “celebrity designer” attitude with this collection, but the consensus found that he has a bit of growing to do before shaking that image. At this point we can either see DW turning into something comparable to Lindsay Lohan’s jegging line fiasco or the perfection that is Gwen Stefani’s L.A.M.B. Regardless, we wish Mr. West the best.
